Sleep Apnoea & Snoring
It might surprise you to know that 41% of men and 28% of women snore. Far from being funny, snoring and it's more extreme manifestation, sleep apnoea, can cause sleepless nights, day time tiredness, loss of memory, loss of concentration, a reduction in working capacity and even affect your relationships. Snoring occurs when the muscles of the lower jaw relax during sleep and allow the tongue to fall against the back of the throat. This blocks the airway and requires massive effort to get air past the natural obstruction causing the soft tissues of the palate to vibrate. Sleep apnoea occurs when air doesn't get through and the person wakes momentarily to inhale. This broken sleep pattern might happen anything up to 50 times a night or more, causing many of the problems mentioned above.
There are several ways of treating snoring and sleep apnoea, but the most acceptable to patients is the fitting of a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD).
The Smile Centre surgeons offer the Sleepwell and Therasnore to our patients which can give up to a 92% improvement in symptoms both of which are removable, adjustable, comfortable and long lasting.
